You should often hand wash a wooden board though as they should not be submerged in water for long periods of time.

Marble and stone are excellent materials for a chopping board as knives don't tend to mark the surfaces of them, making it harder for meat juices to seep into the grooves and potentially leave bacteria in the chopping board.
